NCAN is so excited as we get our last minute details ironed out for you!

A few more reminders:

  • Please bring extra layers of clothing! The conference rooms DO get cold, please be prepared!
  • For patients: please bring extra medication, in case of emergency! And take pictures of your medication bottles on your cell phone in case you were to lose them!
  • As always, the conference is a safe space for patients. It is a place for learning about a better quality and quantity of life. Please refrain from self-advertisement and solicitation at our conference. If you are caught soliciting, you will be asked to leave for the remainder of the conference without refund. Speaker Spotlight – 2016 National Conference Edition Part 7

Bio:

Dr Metz is Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he is director of the Acid-Peptic Disease Program and codirector of the GI Physiology Laboratory, the Swallowing Disorders Program and the Neuroendocrine Tumor Program.

He is actively involved in clinical research, patient care, and teaching of students, residents, and fellows. Dr Metz’s clinical research program is particularly active in acid-peptic conditions including hypersecretory states such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug gastropathy, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. He also has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with functional and non-functional neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas and alimentary tract. He has been a principal investigator on a number of trials evaluating upper gastrointestinal disease states. He is also active in national gastroenterology societies and was a prior member of the Liason Committee for Recertification of the American Board of Internal Medicine (American Gastroenterological Association representative) and the US Food and Drug Administration Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee. He is vice chair of the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS)

Dr Metz earned his MBBCh (MD equivalent) from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He moved to the United States in 1986 and pursued a residency in internal medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology in Washington, DC, in the combined Georgetown/Veterans Affairs Medical Center/National Institutes of Health (NIH) program. He remained on staff at the NIH for 2 more years as a senior staff fellow, performing basic research in pancreatic acinar cell secretion and clinical research in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome specifically.

In 1993, Dr Metz moved to Philadelphia in the role of Assistant Professor in the clinician educator track at the University of Pennsylvania. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and Full Professor in 2003.

Hal Gerstein, MD

Bio:

Dr. Hal Gerstein was a member of the exclusive Biomedical Research Program at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and the Albany Medical College in Albany, NY where he earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1978 after six years of study. While earning his degree, Dr. Gerstein was awarded the Mosby Award for Outstanding Research in the field of virology. He then successfully completed an internal medicine residency as well as a medical oncology and hematology fellowship at the North Shore University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital from 1978 through 1984. Dr. Gerstein is board-certified in both  Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Gerstein is currently a Senior Attending Physician on the staff of both the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park. He has held teaching positions at the NYU School of Medicine and the Cornell School of Medicine, and is currently the medical advisor to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network.  Dr. Gerstein has participated in over twenty research projects in the field of medical oncology as a principle investigator and has published several papers in nationally recognized journals. He brings over 30 years of clinical expertise to his patients.

Bio:

Edward M. Wolin, MD is an internationally recognized Neuroendocrine Medical Oncologist. Patients from all over the United States and abroad come to see him for access to personalized care and the latest diagnostic and therapy programs.   

Dr. Wolin graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and received his MD degree From Yale School of Medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.  After serving as intern and resident in Internal Medicine at Stanford University, he became a clinical fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.  He returned to Stanford to complete his Fellowship in Medical Oncology before starting his academic career at the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Wolin was previously the Director of Neuroendocrine and GI Oncology Program and the Director of Clinical Research at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.  For the preceding 26 years, he held key positions at Cedars–Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he founded and directed of one of the largest and most productive Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Tumor Programs in the country.

Clinical Focus:

Dr. Wolin treats all types of carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumors, ranging from tumors of the small intestine (carcinoid), pancreas, lung and colon to those of the rectum, appendix, stomach and other sites. These include hormone-producing tumors such as carcinoid (serotonin), gastrinoma (gastrin), insulinoma (insulin), glucagonoma (glucagon), VIPoma (VIP); liver metastasis, and carcinoid syndrome. 

Dr. Wolin is a critical member of Montefiore’s outstanding multidisciplinary neuroendocrine team, that includes medical oncologists, surgeons, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, as well as specialists in nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, diagnostic radiology, and other areas.

Research Focus:

As Director of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Program at Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, Dr. Wolin brings a robust research program to Montefiore that supports multiple clinical trials. His research efforts focus on finding the most effective and least toxic treatments, such as pasireotide, lanreotide, everolimus, other m-TOR inhibitors, targeted radiation, including peptide receptor radiotherapy with Lu-177.

Dr. Wolin has pioneered the development of neuroendocrine tumor therapy with novel somatostatin analogs, mTOR inhibitors, anti-angiogenic drugs, and peptide receptor radiotherapy (PRRT) using 177Lu-DOTATATE, as well as PET imaging with 67GA-DOTATATE scanning.

His research also pursues new directions in immunotherapy, anti-angiogenic drugs, novel targeted biologic anti-cancer treatments, as well as targeted treatment of liver metastases. In addition, Dr. Wolin directs his research towards the development of new imaging and diagnostic procedures for carcinoid/neuroendocrine tumors.
